Responsible sourcing, transparency, and traceability at the heart of what we do

Sourcing responsibly is vital to the sustainable success of our business and of our sector, and the sustainable development of the countries from which our raw materials originate.

Valcambi gives the highest priority to transparency, and meets and goes beyond the most stringent industry standards of traceability, in compliance with all the key responsible sourcing frameworks. These include international regulations, and voluntary standards and guidance, such as:

  • The OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas
  • The LBMA Responsible Sourcing Guidances on Gold and Silver
  • The LPPM Responsible Sourcing Guidances on Platinum and Palladium
  • The Responsible Jewellery Council Code of Practice and Chain of Custody Standard
  • The World Gold Council “Conflict-Free Gold Standard”
  • The Swiss Ordinance on Due Diligence and Transparency in relation to Minerals and Metals from Conflict-Affected Areas and Child Labour (DDTrO)
  • The Regulation (EU) 2017/821 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 May 2017 laying down Supply Chain Due Diligence Obligations for Union Importers of Tin, Tantalum and Tungsten, their ores, and Gold originating from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas
  • The Dodd-Frank Act, Section 1502.

For Valcambi, responsible sourcing is not just a licence to operate. It is embedded into our company’s culture of being a responsible business.

Elena Masella - Compliance Officer

To ensure that these standards are respected and upheld, we conduct extensive due diligence practices to identify and select our business partners.
Our practices include risk assessments covering white collar-related crimes, human rights-related crimes, risks related to working conditions and child labour, and other risks, including money laundering.

Our due diligence practices are not restricted to our first counterparty.
Where needed, they cover multiple levels along the supply chain, up to the origin of the precious metals.

We aim to go beyond compliance-based due diligence where necessary.
As part of our continuous improvement process, we review our compliance systems and procedures on an ongoing basis, as well as our counterparties’ assessments.

For all of our products we have a documentary-based traceability system in place and audits on our practices are performed by third parties on a regular basis.
We also conduct on-the-ground visits and spot checks to assess and verify the responsible practices of our counterparties.

Our responsible sourcing model has raised the interest of other actors in the gold and other minerals sectors who are looking to learn from us.
We always welcome sharing best practices so that our systems benefit the entire industry.
In turn, we can learn from other players, as responsible practices are a continuous process of improvement.
